Import Duty Checker: What Your Agent Parcel Will Cost on Arrival

Updated · by The Joyagoo Spreadsheets desk

Quick answer

The 2026 rules in one line each. EU: parcels under €150 pay a flat €3 duty per item category from July 1, 2026, plus VAT. UK: no customs duty under £135; 20% VAT is charged at checkout. US: the $800 duty-free allowance ended on August 29, 2025, so every parcel can owe duty. Canada: duty and tax above CAD $20 for most parcels from China. Australia: 10% GST at checkout on goods of A$1,000 or less. The checker below turns that into an estimate for your parcel.

Estimate the tax and duty on your parcel

An estimate, not a customs ruling. "Item categories" means different kinds of goods — for example T-shirts, trainers and a bag are three. It uses standard VAT rates for euro-area countries (other EU members use the same €3 rule in their own currency conversion); reduced rates, carrier handling fees and product-specific duty above the thresholds aren't included.

The EU's €3 rule, explained

From July 1, 2026, the EU charges a flat €3 customs duty on low-value parcels, counted per item category rather than per parcel: a parcel with hoodies and trainers pays €6, one with only hoodies pays €3. VAT is charged on top, as before, usually collected by the seller or carrier. The practical lesson is that mixing many kinds of goods in one small parcel now costs more than it did.

The UK: still the friendliest for small hauls

Under £135 there's no customs duty, and VAT at 20% is charged at the point of sale. The government has said this relief will be repealed, expected by October 2028 at the latest, so it may not last.

The US: no allowance at all

With the $800 allowance gone, duty applies to every parcel. The rate depends on what the goods are and on current US tariffs on Chinese goods, which have changed several times. The checker doesn't estimate US duty for that reason; budget for duty plus a possible carrier handling fee, and check with your agent's shipping line.

How to pay less duty on an agent parcel, legally

  • EU: fewer categories per parcel. Three hoodies cost less in duty than a hoodie, a cap and trainers, because each category adds €3.
  • UK: know what counts towards £135. The limit applies to the value of the goods in a consignment. Above it, customs duty depends on the goods, so a very large haul can cost noticeably more.
  • Declare truthfully. Under-declaring the value is illegal and can lead to the parcel being held or fined. Agents' "declared value" fields are for accurate values.
  • Choose the shipping line carefully. Some lines collect tax upfront (VAT at checkout); others leave it to the courier, who may add a handling fee on delivery.

One more point: customs can detain goods that copy a registered brand's logo or design, under intellectual-property rules in the EU, UK and elsewhere. That's separate from duty, and paying duty doesn't prevent it. Unbranded items aren't affected.
